Steps to a Healthier Clark County, WA

Fit Pick™ is part of Balanced For Life™, a program created by the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA) for the purpose of educating Americans about the role of healthy snacks and the importance of a balanced diet and physical activity.

In Clark County, Washington, Community Choices and Steps to a Healthier Clark County are taking the lead. In 2006, their initiative convened a group of local employers, school districts and vending operators who shared the common goal of increasing access to healthy food in area vending machines. Together, this team researched nutrition criteria, labeling options, products and their placement in machines, as well as marketing and promotion concepts.

In 2007, the team adopted the Fit Pick™ labeling system and organized their work into this website, the Guides to Planning and Implementation and Fit Pick™ promotional materials to support other communities, worksites, schools and organizations that wish to pursue the same vision.

The Fit Pick™ public awareness and education campaign was made possible through the Steps to a Healthier Clark County initiative. Steps was funded though a five-year federal grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In Clark County Washington, Steps was managed by Community Choices.
